Tutorial 1. Interacting with the User Interface (For Microsoft
Windows® Only)
This tutorial is for DataScene versions running on the Microsoft Windows®
operating system. Please skip this tutorial if you are running DataScene on a
different operating system.
In this tutorial, we will learn about the user interface
of DataScene. It is recommended that you read the topics DataScene
User Interface and Dock Panel before continue.
Start the DataScene program by double clicking its desktop icon or by launching it from the
Start menu (Start ®
All Programs ®
DataScene ®
DataScene).
Upon startup for the first time, the user interface is arranged in the default
state: the ToolBox and
Navigator are docked to the left docking area of the main application window as two dock
windows; the Messages Window is shown on the
bottom of the main application window
as an auto-hide window in the hidden
status.

Fig.1. Default layout of the user interface.
Move the mouse pointer onto the Messages Window
tab strip on the bottom of the main application window. This makes it spring out from the bottom of the main application window and
change to the mouse-hover-display
status. Move
the mouse pointer out of the Messages Window, it hides
back onto the bottom of the main application window as a tab strip and changes back to the hidden
status.

Drag the caption of the
Navigator while keeping the left mouse button pressed and drop
it onto the right dock-site indicator, this docks the
Navigator into the right docking area
of the main application window.

indicator.
Now drag the caption of the ToolBox and drop it
onto the central dock-site indicator of the right docking area of the main application window. This docks
the ToolBox to the right docking area of the main application window and nests it with
the
Navigator.

indicator of the right docking area of the main application window.
The nested
Navigator and ToolBox are displayed in the same pane with two tabs
shown on the bottom of the pane. Clicking a tab selects the corresponding window.

ToolBox.
Click the auto-hide button
on the pane containing the nested
Navigator and ToolBox, this changes the
Navigator and ToolBox into the auto-hide mode and hides them on the right edge of the main application window.

Now close the DataScene program and then reopen it, you will find DataScene
automatically restore its interface to the layout state before it was closed. You may
re-arrange the layout of the user interface to your content - DataScene will automatically
restore your settings the next you start it.
